About the Artist
Born 1936, Friedrichshafen, Germany
Alumnus of the Städelschule Academy
of Fine Arts, Frankfurt
Manfred Bucher represents a "missing chapter" of the post-war German avant-garde. A student of the prestigious Städelschule during the height of the 1960s radicalism, Bucher chose a path of independent, private development over the commercial art market. His work is a sophisticated synthesis of Classical Modernism and instinctive Fauvism, characterised by a bold, gestural command of colour and a profound connection to the natural world. After decades of refined seclusion, his archive reveals a "hidden master" whose voice remains remarkably fresh and contemporary.
Chronological Archive
The Formative Avant-Garde
1960s – 1972
Deeply influenced by the Fluxus movement and the arrival of American Pop Art (Lichtenstein, Johns, Warhol) in Europe. During this period,
Bucher shared a studio with Kurt Nietzer and engaged in cross-disciplinary collaborations with the Wiesbaden Theatre. His "War Paintings" from this era serve as a critical processing of childhood wartime memories through a radical, contemporary lens.
The Period of Private Mastery
1973 – 1997
Following a move to the Lake Constance hinterland, Bucher entered a phase of deliberate studio isolation. Eschewing the trend-driven art market, he focused on the internal evolution of his painterly language – distilling his academic foundation into the raw, instinctive "Fauvist" approach that defines his current Spätwerk (late work).
Establishing a studio in Hyères (Côte d'Azur), Bucher's palette underwent a dramatic "Fauvist" brightening, capturing the intense southern light. In stark contrast, he simultaneously produced a significant body of sculptures and installations responding to the Yugoslav Wars, demonstrating a continued commitment to social and historical commentary.
The Mediterranean & Political Response
1998 – 2012
The Logic of the Forest
2013 – present
His current work brings his biography full circle. Drawing on his 1950s training as a timber merchant, he engages with the "Measurement of the Forest" – a series exploring the tension between human forestry, deforestation, and the wild, imaginative landscapes of the mind.
